SHEIGRA DXPEDITION REPORT 26th OCTOBER - 15th NOVEMBER 1996 by Clive Rooms The first two weeks saw lots of rain, lots of wind and quite mild temperatures. The third week contrasted with this with little rain and wind, but cold temperatures, especially at night. Taking part this year besides myself, were regulars Steve Whitt and Martin Hall. Also taking part was second timer George Brown, and on his first UK DXpedition, Graham Bell. This DXpedition was the first one I have taken part in where North America was mostly dominant for the whole period, albeit mainly east coast. There were only 2 or 3 openings further west than the mid-west, and certainly nothing like 1995, when there were good openings on about 10 mornings! Saying all that, we still heard our fair share of Caribbeans and Latin Americans. Besides erecting the usual Caribbean Beverage and the two to North America, this year for the first time for a few years, we put out a Beverage aimed at Asia. It seemed to work quite well as VOA Philippines and Thailand were heard like locals, and also the Solomon Islands on 5020 SW was logged. Enough prattle, on with the logs. All times are UTC. +++ NORTH AMERICA +++ 540 0645 4/11 UNID CBAG-1 or CBEF Radio Canada FF ID, //1580 540 0654 7/11 WQTM Pine Hills FL ID, 1 on 1 Sports 560 0711 27/10 CHVO Carbonear NF "VOCM Network" //590 etc 570 0703 9/11 UNID with Good Time Oldies, CFCB? Nothing very strong. 27/28 Varied evening. Good opening to Florida in the morning. Fade out 0915. 28/29 Poor night to N/Am with just a few brief openings. Latin America mainly dominant. 29/30 Rather poor in the evening, good east coast N/Am in the morning. 30/31 Very poor night. High atmospheric noise levels. 31/1 Fairish to mainly East Coast N/Am. Little noise thankfully. Fade out 1030. 1/2 Odd propagation, East Coast N/Am but nothing special noted. 2/3 Excellent N/Am night, highlight being KXBT 1630. 3/4 Good East Coast and Caribbean night. Another early fade out at 0900. 4/5 Poor evening with little heard. Good N/Am east coast morning, but still no major opening further inland with later fade out. 5/6 Fairly similar to previous night. 6/7 Similar to two previous evenings. 7/8 L/A and Caribbean continue to mainly dominate evenings with reasonable reception of East Coast N/Ams in mornings. 8/9 At last! A good opening to the Prairies, AK, ND, OK etc. 1000-1200. 9/10 Back to normal! Pretty good East Coast N/Am night though. 10/11 Good opening to CO & CA 1000-1130. 11/12 Very good east coast N/Am night but no opening in the morning. 12/13 Reasonable opening to the mid-west in the morning. 13/14 Naff night, nuff said! 14/15 Only weak, fluttery signals audible, and not many of them from N/Am. So another DXpedition ends with 10 Canadian Provinces and 31 US States heard, plus 35 countries heard, not counting Europeans. Sheigra DX-peditions (introduction from Web page) As you are probably aware, at night the signals from MW broadcast band stations can carry over great distances but throughout most of the UK and Europe the possibility of hearing weak distant signals is hampered by strong interference from local broadcast stations and man-made electrical interference. In order to have a better chance of hearing faraway stations DXers ideally should have a location that: - is away from local broadcast interference - is electrically quiet (No factories, cars, computers etc) - has space to erect large directional antennas For these reasons, since the mid-1980s, keen DXers have regularly visited a farm house in the small village of Sheigra located just 12 miles from the most northerly point of mainland Britain. (5o 6' 30" West: 58o 29' 45" North) [degrees/minutes/seconds]. Sheigra was adopted after earlier experiments at a site in Anglesey. Here there is lots of space for big aerials such as several 500m Beverages. Sheigra is located on the coast and this gives the further advantage of sea- gain for MW signals arriving from the Americas and across the North Pole. It also benefits from extended night-time in winter due to its high latitude and this has resulted in trans-polar reception of Alaskan signals at Sheigra local mid-day!! The Medium Wave Circle organises at least one DX-pedition per year to Sheigra which (depending on its popularity) lasts for 2-4 weeks usually around the Spring or Autumn equinoxes. Other trips have taken place in deep mid winter. The latest DX-pedition was held in October/November 1996 and a full report has of course appeared in Medium Wave News and can also be read here.
